On Behalf of | Oct 20, 2022 | Estate Planning |

When someone picks an executor for their estate plan, they do so with the idea that this person will be trustworthy and someone who can see their plans through.

But these are not the only skills that an executor should possess. In fact, this is an enormous job that requires a lot of executors.

Team lead skills

Forbes talks about the skills executors need to have. First, it is important to remember that an executor essentially acts as the manager of an estate plan. Many of the tasks will rest on their shoulders, and other people involved in the plan like attorneys or financial advisors will have contact with them at some point.

It is also a job that requires some social skill and emotional capability. These people will interact directly with grieving loved ones and must have the finesse to work through difficult conversations while balancing their own grief.

Task and self management

Due to their work with the estate legal team, they also need the ability to stick to deadlines. Many of the paperwork they need to fill and the debts they need to pay have to happen within a set amount of time, and they cannot afford to be late.

Of course, they need to be self-motivated and have the capacity to manage themselves. Since they are at the top of the management pyramid, no one else will be around to tell them what to do or when to do it.

It is a difficult position, and the person who fills the role needs to have multifaceted talents to fit the bill.
